UT02: Needs/ Risk Assessment and Support Planning

Aims of the course
The course aims to ensure that delegates:

1. Develop more effective assessment skills and greater understanding of how to conduct positive and motivational assessments.
2. Further develop skills and understanding of effective support planning, using goal planning as the central tool.
3. Feel more confidence in the ability to empower and motivate others to take action to change their lives positively.

Objectives of the course
By the end of the course delegates will have:

1. Clarified the purpose and potential values of goal centred support planning and the key stages of a support planning process.
2. Reviewed three core principles of effective support planning (supporting choice and self determination; recognising diversity; empowering self-advocacy) and identified the key challenges to applying these principles in their day-to-day practice.
3. Identified the key stages and scope of effective support planning assessments and understood more about the use of assessment to formulate an effective support plan in partnership with a service user.
4. Developed more and smarter goal planning skills through practice.
5. Learned more about what motivates people and how to apply ideas from key motivation theories in their work with service users.
6. Practised writing effective needs, strengths and risks in assessments and support plans, using a variety of exercises.
7. RISK ASSESSMENT & RISK MANAGEMENT: Identified and clarified the key elements of a sound risk assessment process and practiced key skills in the process of assessing and managing risks:

(a) Identifying and writing effective hazards/risks using case study;
(b) Quantifying hazards/risks using the grid system and applying it to examples;
(c) Planning strategies for managing risks (writing short and focused risk management plans);

The event is for Project Workers and Managers with responsibility for delivering needs and risk assessments and supporting service users to develop a goal centred support plan.

No prior knowledge or experience required.

Due to the comprehensive content of this course, each day runs from 09.30 - 16.45.

Methods Used
Short, focussed and lively presentations by the trainer including PowerPoint projection; short, focussed small group tasks and discussions to help clarify thinking; limited feedback from group sessions to allow for the development of ideas during whole group discussions; question and answer sessions; a wide variety of written exercises and case studies and other tasks mostly completed in pairs, some on an individual basis to help delegates practice applying the tools and knowledge covered by the course (all written exercises are retained by the delegate, and please note that spelling is not an issue on this event); to constantly encourage delegates to try new things. The style of delivery is up-beat and provides a positive focus constantly to the event which is motivational and aims to inspire delegates to act. All delegate contributions that fall within the agreed Delegate Commitments are valued and acknowledged appropriately. Delegates are constantly encouraged to work with different people attending to maximise the perspectives available.
