Aims of the course
The course provide delegates with a relevant, practical course aimed at identifying and managing personal safety and lone working risks whilst working with service users.
Objectives of the course
By the end of the course delegates will be able to:
Understand Aggression
Describe the nature and causes of aggression when dealing with supported housing related issues.
Understand the Legal and Quality Assessment Framework requirements
Explain their legal and QAF duties relating to lone working and aggression
Apply Prevention Techniques
Conduct ‘on the spot risk assessments’ in order to minimise risks, including:
• Lone Working
• One-one meetings
• Home visits
• Late working
• Managing communal areas
Develop personal strategies to include a Buddy / Contact System, a warning marker system (including compliance with Data Protection legislation), alarm systems and location layout.
Manage the Risks
Explain the essentials of defusing aggression; develop specific ways to manage:
• Group aggression
• Non-verbal threats
• Mental health as it relates to aggression
• Intoxication and threats
• Telephone aggression
Aftercare
Decide when, what and how to report
Describe the effects of violence and aggression
Who will benefit?
The event is for all staff who work with service users and others, in a closed environment or in the community. The course is a practical event specifically designed to equip staff with the skills to manage their personal safety. The course is not suitable for staff wishing to cascade information within their own organisation.

No prior knowledge or experience required.
